The government on Saturday strongly criticised main opposition New Democracy and its leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis over statements targeting Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Ieronymos on Friday, calling them an "unprecedented, unfair and unholy attack on the head of the Church of Greece."

"What does Mr. Mitsotakis mean, really, when he accuses a prelate who has served the Church with devotion and won the respect of the people in his long career of 'transactions' with the prime minister," a Maximos Mansion announcement said, accusing Mitsotakis of "trying to drag the Church into his party-political planning".
