The Municipality of Athens invites schoolkids, students, high school teachers and education professionals, to the innovative digital workshop Maker Space, on June 9th at the Serafio center. The workshop’s program includes robotics, space travel via virtual reality devices, construction of educational games used in the classroom with 3D printers and laser cutting machines.

“With Maker Space, we give our children the opportunity to use the tools of the future. In a world of rapid technological developments, the best equipment we can give them is the ability to be creators, not just passive users of technology”, says the mayor of Athens, Yiorgos Kaminis.

Maker Space is a key component of the Municipality of Athens’ innovative program “I Learn Better this Way”, which is implemented in collaboration with the TUC TIE Lab of the Technical University of Crete and coordinated by the Athens Partnership. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation is the exclusive donor. This year, the program received the Golden Prize at the Leaders Awards 2018 in the Best Learning Experience category.

The teachers are learning

More than 220 teachers have already participated in training workshops at Maker Space in the creation of pedagogical material that can transform the class into a pleasant learning place. IN the space of eight weekly seminars, teachers are invited to design, under the guidance of architects-researchers from Crete’s Technical University, and create their own original game.

The students are exploring

More than 1150 students had already the opportunity to get acquainted with the applied digital technologies through experiential actions and experiments at Maker Space, the first municipal structure in Greece equipped with machinery and digital tools for designing, printing and manufacturing (laser cutters, 3d printers, CNC router, vinyl cutter, etc.).

Through STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) seminars, children are “transported” at the International Space Station and observe the astronauts’ life there or they experiment with the magic of musical notes an apple can hide.
