The bill of the Interior Ministry on reforms in the Local Government institutional framework has been submitted to the Greek Parliament. The bill provides, among others, for the establishment of the integral proportional representation as the electoral system in municipal and regional elections. If no combination gathers 50% plus 1, the voting will be repeated the following Sunday (second round) between the first two combinations. Local government elections will be held on the second Sunday of October (the next ones will be held on October 13), while the municipal and regional term will last four years.
The bill also includes reforms for strengthening the institutions of the citizens’ participation in civic life, by holding referenda per municipality and per region regarding local issues. Municipalities will be distinguished in five categories based on their population, their specific geomorphological features, the main features of the economic activity within their boundaries, the degree of their urbanization and their position in the country’s administrative division.
