Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Thursday met the Syriac Orthdox Patriarch of Antioch and all the East Ignatius Aphrem II in Athens. The meeting, which was held in the presence of Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Ieronymos, focused on the situation in Syria and particularly of the Christian populations there.

The prime minister acknowledged the great efforts made by Patriarch Ignatius Aphrem II to protect and preserve the unity of the region's Christians, noting that Greece is prepared to offer every possible support to his efforts.

The Patriarch expressed gratitude for the solidarity shown to refugees from Syria in Greece as they fled the war zone and the desire that Greece should, in due course, help to rebuild Syria after the lengthy civil war.
