Athens’ proposal for early repayment of part of the Greek debt to the IMF, was received positively, stated Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos upon his return from Washington, where he took part in the Fund’s Spring session.

As the Greek minister explained, IMF Chief Christine Lagarde considers that early debt repayment is a positive development, while acknowledging that the request is fair, as something similar happened with Ireland and Portugal.

As a consequence, the Greek government is expected to send the request for repayment of the € 3.7bn euros with 5.13% interest, out of a total of approximately € 9.5bn euros.

The process is expected to last a few weeks, since the proposal will first have to be approved by the ESM and certain European countries’ parliaments.
