The anniversary of the Polytechnic Uprising is most of all a commemoration of those that fought and particularly those who fell for democracy, underlined President of Republic Prokopios Pavlopoulos in his message on Friday for the anniversary.

"It is also an iconic day for reflection on the timeless values of freedom and democracy and the need to daily and unconditionally defend these," he said, adding that it is now a commonplace that the European Union and the European edifice are under direct threat from extremely dangerous forms of populism, which even smack of the mindset of fascism and nazism, which are unfortunately multiplying in the member-states of the European Union and which it is our duty, as conscientious Europeans, to face as heinous enemies of freedom and democracy," concluded Pavlopoulos.
