In an exclusive interview to ERT, Managing Director of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) Klaus Regling expressed his belief that Greece may return to markets in 2017 or next year provided that the reform program continues successfully. Regarding the debt issue, Mr. Regling stressed that Greek citizens should realize that there is a long-term commitment and that Eurogroup is ready to help in case of unforeseen developments.

Mr. Regling also made clear that the ESM could turn into a European Monetary Fund only after the end of Greece’s bailout program, in 2018. Regarding the possibility of a new Eurozone Finance Minister, the ESM Managing Director stated that the Minister’s duties should be first determined and that there should be a budget for the Eurozone other than the Community budget.
