Unknown individuals broke into the archaeological site containing the Sanctuary of the Egyptian Gods in Brexiza, Marathon overnight and vandalised replicas of ancient statues placed there, severely damaging them, the culture ministry said on Wednesday.

"This morning, 20 June 2018, the guard of the visitable archaeological site of the Sanctuary of the Egyptian Gods in Brexiza, Marathon discovered that yesterday, 19 June 2018, after the end of his working day, unknown individuals broke into the archaeological site and inflicted significant damage on copies of the statues of the gods Isis and Osiris that are set up in pairs at the three pillars of the sanctuary," an announcement said.

The incident was being investigated by the Nea Makri security police force, the announcement added, while the original statues are on display in the Marathon Archaeological Museum.
