“The time has come for a common European immigration policy. The Pact provides the missing pieces of the puzzle for an integrated approach to migration”, said European Commission Vice President and Commissioner for Promoting our European way of Life Margaritis Schinas on Wednesday, during the presentation of the Commission’s proposals for a new EU pact on migration and asylum.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said: “Today we are proposing a European solution for rebuilding the trust between Member States and restoring the citizens’ confidence in our ability to manage migration as a Union”.
After the fire that destroyed the facility in Moria, the Commission announced the establishment of a special working group to improve the situation of refugees and migrants in Lesvos.
The task force will help ensure effective migration management, including satisfactory living conditions, greater certainty through faster procedures and a more balanced distribution of responsibility and solidarity. The task force will work closely with EU and the international organizations that are located there.
One of the team’s priorities is to work closely with the Greek authorities to build new reception facilities in the coming months. These facilities will be of European standards, durable and with an access to health care and adequate sanitation. They will also take into account the special needs of women, children and families, and will require greater involvement of EU and international organizations, such as the UNHCR and the International Organization for Migration.
