A the age of 36, Spyros Gianniotis finished the last race of his career in swimming getting finally the only medal missing from his vast collection, losing the title of Olympic gold by a whisker.

The leading Greek athlete took second place in the 10km swimming marathon at the Rio Olympics, overcoming his personal disappointment at the fourth place in London, four years ago, and completed his career with a triumph.

The Greek champion was first in the last meters of the race, but lost his place literally at the last hand to the Dutch champion Ferry Weertman who took advantage of his opponent’s momentary inaction and got to hit the touchpad first.
