In view of the intensification of research activity for hydrocarbons in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Cyprus, Ankara is sending the vessel “Barbaros” for researches off the coast of Cyprus from October 17 until February 1, 2019, based on the directive NAVTEX 1032/18 issued. The area to which Turkey is sending “Barbaros” is close to the point where the Greek, the Egyptian and the Cypriot continental shelf meets, and which is disputed by Turkey.

Turkey aims at effectively disputing the right of Greece and Cyprus to a continental shelf in the Eastern Mediterranean. This action is also a response to the recent declaration of the tripartite Greek-Cypriot-Egyptian Summit, where the three countries once again expressed their commitment to speed up the procedures for the sea zones between them to be demarcated.
