The North Aegean Region and its municipalities have called for a general strike on Wednesday, following Tuesday’s clashes between the police and the residents who are opposed to the construction of closed migrant centers.

In Lesvos, the incidents took place in Diavolorema and Karava, on the road leading to the land where the closed structures will be built, and in Chios, construction began amidst severe reactions.

Government spokesman Stelios Petsas reiterated that it is imperative that the current unregulated structures that pose a high health risk, should be closed down and be replaced by closed accommodation centers.

For their part, opposition parties accuse the government of authoritarianism and use of force.
