The construction of the new International Airport of Heraklion in Kastelli, is set to begin after the signing of the concession contract by the Minister of Infrastructure Christos Spirtzis and the representatives of the Ariadne Airport Group. According to construction planning, the project is scheduled to be completed in five years.

The Minister stressed that the existing airport can no longer support the needs of Heraklion and Crete and has committed that the project will respect the environment and the architectural heritage of Crete. The Minister also announced the construction of a building dedicated to the promotion of local products.

Village residents adjacent to the new airport gathered in Kastelli to express their opposition to the construction of the new airport.

The Minister of Infrastructure met with their representatives, with whom he discussed the expropriations required and the environmental issues they raised.
