The European Union is ready to react appropriately and in full solidarity with Cyprus as for the first time it has decided to take measures against Turkey for violating international law and specifically for its activities in Cyprus’ EZZ.

In particular, the General Affairs Council “underlines the serious negative direct impact of these unlawful acts on the whole range of EU-Turkey relations” and calls on Turkey to “show restraint, respect Cyprus’ sovereign rights and abstain from these actions”.

At the same time, the EU has decided to suspend not only the accession negotiations, but also the talks regarding the customs union.

“The EU sends a clear message that Turkey’s unlawful behavior must come to an end,” stressed Foreign Minister Yorgos Katrougalos, noting that anyone who commits unlawful actions must also have consequences”.
