The European Commission distances itself from the statement issued by the Commissioner for Immigration, Home Affairs and Citizenship, Dimitris Avramopoulos, who said that “the Prespes Agreement is not balanced and therefore problematic”.

European Commission spokesperson Margaritis Schinas said that the Commission’s official position is the one expressed by its chairman, Jean-Claude Juncker, and the responsible Commissioners, while he underlined that the decisions taken by the College of Commissioners were voted unanimously.

Mr Schinas said that the Commission’s position is that Prespes is an important agreement that resolves one of the oldest conflicts in the region and gives the opportunity to overcome the past and reconcile not only the region but also the Europe as a whole.

He added that the Commission is monitoring the procedures for the implementation of the Agreement and stressed that what matters now is the vote at the Greek parliament.
