The government’s determination to go ahead with its plan to build closed type accommodation structures for refugees and migrants on the islands away from the cities, government spokesman Stelios Petsas said to ERT.

Mr. Petsas stressed that this prospect is in the country’s interest, because the unregulated accommodation structures pose a significant health risk for the islands.

The government spokesman attributed the islanders’ reactions to their lack of trust over the last years and noted that the primary objective is to decongest the islands, since the government plan involves transporting people from the islands to the inland, as well as the acceleration of asylum procedures.

At the same time, residents strongly oppose the construction. There have been incidents in the ports of Lesvos and Chios, where residents had gathered for the arrival of the boats carrying Riot Police officer squads, which will boost local police forces at the sites where the new structures will be built.
