Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi at Maximos Mansion. During his two-day visit to Greece Mr. Grandi has scheduled meetings with local NGOs and NGO representatives active in the migration / refugee crisis.
The two men had a lengthy discussion on the challenges that Greece is facing in recent years with the rise of migrant and refugee flows from Turkey and the need to provide appropriate responses to the crisis.
They also discussed the UNHCR’s office in Athens decisive contribution to the preparation and launch of the Asylum Service, as well as its staff’s significant contribution at the key entry points and inland for the rapid examination of thousands of requests of international protection submitted to the competent authorities.
Finally, the Prime Minister briefed Mr. Grandi on efforts within the EU to reform the Common European Asylum System while stressing the need for the Turkish side to adhere strictly to the EU-Turkey Declaration of March 2016.
