Greek forces have prevented about 7,000 attempts by immigrants to cross the Greek-Turkish border, over the past 24 hours. In the meantime, Turkey is escalating tensions with the deployment of 1,000 officers of its elite police units at the border.

Greek soldiers continue to patrol all along Evros River, 24 hours a day, trying to prevent any illegal entries from Turkey to our country.

Overall, 36,649 illegal crossings were prevented over the last five days and 252 people were arrested, most of whom came from Afghanistan (64%), Pakistan (19%), Turkey (5%), Syria (4%) ), Somalia (2.6%) and Iraq, Iran, Morocco, Ethiopia, Bangladesh and Egypt (5.4%).

According to the migrants’ own testimonies, the Turkish authorities do not allow them to return to Constantinople and urge them to cross the Strait of Evros to Greece.
