The informal EU Summit in Salzburg, Austria, was concluded without any substantial results for a common agreement on the refugee and migration issue. After the Summit, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras stated that the refugee crisis is the central political and ideological issue for the future of Europe, and divides Europe into two spheres: to those who believe that it can be tackled by making their country a fortress and to those who believe that the root causes of the phenomenon should first be tackled. “Realism and rationality should prevail,” he said.

Addressing the Plenary, Mr. Tsipras also asked that the establishment of a European Civil Protection Mechanism be accelerated, so that the EU member states have access to more and more modern means for dealing with natural disasters.
