The Turkish research vessel “Barbaros” together with two support vessels are currently in the boundaries of segments 4 and 5 of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Cyprus. The area illegally “bound” by Turkey, by issuing a NAVTEX directive, in order to conduct illegal seismic researches, is within the understood boundaries of the Exclusive Economic Zones of Cyprus, Greece and Egypt.

Athens and Nicosia responded strongly; in an announcement, the Greek Foreign Ministry stresses, “This new provocation on part of Turkey demonstrates that it continues to act in a way that causes tension in the Aegean Sea and the eastern Mediterranean. We remind that the carrying out of research on the Greek continental shelf requires prior permission from the competent Greek authorities.” Cyprus has also denounced the Turkish NAVTEX as invalid and illegal.

The Greek frigate “Nikiforos Fokas” maintains eye contact with “Barbaros” vessel within the Greek continental shelf, while a Cypriot frigate is also sailing within the EEZ of Cyprus. On its part, Turkey released a new announcement saying that the area lies within the Turkish continental shelf.
