UN Secretary-General considers the presence of the peacekeeping force in Cyprus as critical and recommends that the Security Council extends the mandate until January 31, 2020. Mr. Antonio Guterres mentions this in his UNFICYP report to the Security Council (S.C.), an unofficial copy of which, was given to the members of the S.C.

A large part of the report, even in the commentary chapter, is devoted to the various incidents that occurred during the last six months in the neutral zone and involve mostly citizens, crime issues, and local tensions.

Describing the developments in this political issue, Mr. Guterres notes that two years after the conclusion of the Cyprus Conference at Crans Montana, the negotiations are still pending.

At the same time, he is worried about the developments in the region, which – he mentions – have not contributed to a positive atmosphere for the resumption of talks.
