United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi concluded his three-day visit to Greece on Thursday.

The UNHCR chief, after concluding his tour of refugee centres in the northern parts of the country, thanked Greece and its government for the humanism and effectiveness with which it has handled the crisis. He also put extra emphasis on the challenges caused by the forthcoming winter especially for the more vulnerable groups such as children and overaged people.

Mr. Grandi also underlined the need for a plan of action in case refugee flows increase in the future, although he thinks this to be highly improbable.

On Wednesday last, the Commissioner held separate meetings with the President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos and the Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras. Mr. Grandi discussed the refugee crisis with the two men and praised Greece’s role in welcoming and providing hospitality to refugees at a time when other European countries closed their borders.
