The Greek Parliament is voting this morning to elect the first female President of the Hellenic Republic. The only candidate is Ekaterini Sakellaropoulou, current president of the Council of State who is expected to receive the votes from ND, SYRIZA and KINAL. As a result, she is expected to be elected on the first voting round, which requires 200 votes in favor.
The Prime Minister will be present at the parliament and will vote before leaving for Davos, Switzerland, in the afternoon, to attend the World Economic Forum. For his part, SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras said that his party would vote in favor of Ekaterini Sakellaropoulou’s election, but accused the prime minister of manipulating the issue in recent months.
KKE, Greek Solution and DiEM25 MPs will vote against this nomination.
